Japan-funded EUR 110M Wastewater Project Reactivated
A Euro 110 million project funded by the Japanese government for wastewater treatment in Tirana is being reactivated. At its latest meeting, the government approved in principle an amendment to the loan agreement for the "Greater Tirana Sewerage System Improvement" project, which had remained unfinished for years.
The agreement will be amended through an exchange of letters between the parties. The initial loan was signed on June 30, 2008, with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation; the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) took over the role under the agreement in October of that same year, Scan TV reported on Wednesday.
This approval follows an announcement made in May by the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaci, regarding the project's reactivation. During a parliamentary interpellation, he stated that the consultant had completed the review and update of the detailed technical design, paving the way for the resumption and completion of the suspended works. According to him, standard tender documents were being drafted at the time, while the competitive process to select the contractor to complete the wastewater treatment plant was expected to begin.
The project aims to improve the capital's sewage system and wastewater treatment. The amendment agreement marks a further step in the project's reactivation process, with the completion of the works remaining the key issue following the delays experienced so far.
